Havier
laCulm

Havier laCulm (Málaga, 1983) is a Spanish artist based in Berlin since 2014. His work explores a range of concepts and media.
Here are a few words about his practice written by the poet, gallerist, and close friend Pawel Jankiewicz:

«A painter of shoulders. Yet it is the line itself that paints the shoulder – a line invested with the authority to do so. There was, in other words, a degree of resistance involved: the struggle through which the figure is wrested into being. Here, being precedes appearance. We can feel it.

The head sometimes appears like a burnt match – exhausted, darkened, the heat carried at the expense of the face. Nothing here settles into depiction alone. The paintings move through painful hesitations and sudden incisions. Like a garden.

The graphic is the root. And still, there is colour that justifies painting. It bursts through the thematic of it – all too narrowing, all too absent from the Neukölln courtyard, gone with the exhausted language of the present. Here the painting carries consequence: it makes a difference.

And to stand before these works is also to encounter, to feel another person through a blade.»
